Why it’s HorroRated

The Golden Glove is one of the most punishing pieces of true crime horror ever made, and Fatih Akin makes the deliberate choice to strip away every layer of stylization that usually softens this genre for an audience. Jonas Dassler disappears completely inside heavy prosthetic makeup to play Fritz Honka as pathetic and repellent rather than charismatic, refusing the audience the seductive-monster dynamic most serial killer films rely on. Akin films the violence with an unflinching, static camera that holds on the aftermath rather than cutting away, and that refusal to look away is precisely what makes the film so difficult to sit through. The 1970s Hamburg red-light district setting is rendered with an oppressive, lived-in squalor that never lets the film feel like a genre exercise rather than a documented horror. It's brutal, deliberately ugly filmmaking that earns its reputation by fully committing to depicting evil without a shred of glamour attached to it.

Synopsis

Fritz Honka frequents a Hamburg dive bar called the Golden Glove throughout the early 1970s, drinking heavily and preying on the district's most vulnerable, often elderly and alcoholic women, luring them back to his squalid attic apartment. Between murders, Honka forces one woman, Gerda, into a degrading domestic arrangement while obsessing over a teenage girl he watches from his window, and the bodies he leaves behind accumulate in the walls of his own home. Fatih Akin directs and adapts Heinz Strunk's novel, casting Jonas Dassler under extensive prosthetics to play the real-life serial killer who murdered and dismembered four women in Hamburg. The film premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and became Akin's first film to receive an 18 rating.
