Why it’s HorroRated

Jack's Back earns its reputation as a hidden gem almost entirely because of James Spader's dual performance, which distinguishes John and Rick Wesford through posture, cadence, and a controlled physical restraint rather than any obvious visual trick. Rowdy Herrington's script structures the mystery with real economy, withholding just enough information to keep the investigation compelling without resorting to cheap misdirection. The Jack the Ripper centennial framing gives the killings a ritualistic weight that most 80s copycat thrillers never bother earning, and the slight supernatural thread woven through Rick's search for his brother's killer adds an unsettling dimension the marketing undersold completely. Spader's performance earned him a Saturn Award nomination and it's easy to see why, since he makes the emotional stakes of losing a twin feel devastating rather than merely plot-functional. An unfairly overlooked thriller that deserves a far bigger audience than its clunky title has ever earned it.

Synopsis

In Los Angeles, a series of murders begins mimicking the Jack the Ripper killings exactly one hundred years after the originals, and medical student John Wesford becomes the prime suspect after being connected to the crime scenes. When John is found dead in an apparent suicide, his identical twin brother Rick refuses to believe the official explanation and starts his own investigation, aided by a psychiatrist and unsettling visions connected to his brother's death. Rowdy Herrington directs and writes his feature debut, casting James Spader in a dual role as both twins. Spader's performance carries the film through its central mystery and earned him a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actor.
