Why it’s HorroRated

Presence earns its recommendation through pure formal commitment, shooting the entire film as unbroken single-take sequences from the ghost's own perspective, which forces every scene to unfold with a real-time intimacy the genre rarely attempts. Steven Soderbergh directed and shot the film himself, and the camera's movement feels genuinely human, jerking toward outbursts and drifting through rooms in ways that make the presence feel like an actual character rather than a stylistic gimmick. The screenplay by David Koepp gradually reveals that the family's real dysfunction, a mother who favors her son over her grieving daughter, a father caught in the middle, is more unsettling than the supernatural threat, and the ghost's benevolence toward Chloe gives the film emotional stakes most haunted house movies don't bother earning. The single-take restriction occasionally forces the actors into exposition-heavy dialogue that undercuts the naturalism the format is chasing. Worth seeking out for anyone interested in formal experimentation, even if the family drama occasionally outpaces the film's ability to fully deliver on it.

Synopsis

A family of four moves into an older home in New Jersey, unaware that a presence already occupies the house and has been watching them since they arrived. Rebekah, the workaholic mother, favors her son Tyler while her daughter Chloe struggles with grief after two friends' recent deaths, and the presence gradually reveals an interest specifically in Chloe's wellbeing as the family's tensions escalate. Steven Soderbergh directs, shoots, and edits the film entirely from the ghost's first-person point of view using unbroken takes, a formal approach that keeps the audience positioned as the haunting itself. David Koepp wrote the screenplay, structuring the story around what the family doesn't know rather than conventional scares.
