Why it’s HorroRated

Hereditary is a devastating piece of family horror that earns its reputation through sustained formal control rather than shock, building dread across two hours until the final act detonates everything the film has been quietly assembling. Ari Aster uses grief as the entry point for something far more sinister, and Toni Collette gives one of the great horror performances in recent memory, moving from raw maternal anguish to something considerably more unhinged without a single false note. The miniature dioramas Annie builds throughout the film function as an unsettling visual motif, suggesting from the opening frame that the Graham family has never been in control of their own story. Aster's patience with pacing means the horror accumulates rather than arrives, and by the time the film's true intentions become clear, the dread has already fully taken hold. It's a film about the specific horror of inherited trauma and family obligation that happens to also deliver some of the most disturbing imagery the genre has produced this century.

Synopsis

Following the death of her secretive mother, Annie Graham begins noticing strange behavior from her withdrawn daughter Charlie, and a devastating family tragedy shortly after sends the household into a spiral neither Annie nor her husband Steve can explain. As Annie searches for answers, she uncovers evidence that her mother was involved in an occult group with disturbing plans for the Graham family specifically. Ari Aster wrote and directed his feature debut, building the film's dread through miniature dioramas, sustained grief, and a patient formal structure that withholds its full intentions until the final act. Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro anchor an ensemble that grounds the escalating supernatural horror in devastating family dysfunction.
