A Different Man

A Different Man earns its rating by refusing the easy version of its own premise, using body horror mechanics to deliver something considerably more uncomfortable than a simple transformation fantasy. Sebastian Stan gives a fully committed performance across two distinct registers, and the physical transformation sequence itself is one of the most effective pieces of body horror produced in recent years. Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life, delivers a performance so charismatic and confident that it retroactively indicts everything Edward believed his old face was preventing him from having. Aaron Schimberg structures the film as a slow-building dark comedy that curdles into something deeply unsettling once Edward realizes changing his appearance solved nothing about who he actually is. It's a formally daring, uncomfortable film that uses horror conventions to say something real about identity, envy, and the lies people tell themselves about self-improvement.
