Why it’s HorroRated

The Thing Beneath earns its recommendation by nailing the specific tone it's going for: campy, self-aware 80s teen slasher horror that leans into its own absurdity without losing genuine tension underneath the jokes. Studio Laaya builds real dread through suggestion, the environmental storytelling scattered around the island, particularly the wall notes hinting at the creature's origin, does more work than direct exposition would have. The voice acting is a welcome and unexpected touch for a game jam submission, and the retro PSX visual style suits the material without feeling like an obligatory aesthetic choice tacked onto a modern game. Multiple endings give it real replay value for a twenty-minute experience, and the smoking minigame mechanic is a small, oddly memorable detail that players keep bringing up. It's a confident, well-crafted short horror game that punches well above what its game jam origins would suggest.

Synopsis

Five teenagers set out for a carefree camping trip on an abandoned island, planning to drink and enjoy themselves before discovering the desolation isn't accidental. As night falls, the group encounters a creature responsible for the island's history, and players navigate first-person survival horror sequences that determine which of several possible endings they reach. Studio Laaya, Reaktori, Axel Kulomaa, and Rong_Z built the game for the Haunted PS1 Summer Camp Jam and ASM Game Jam 2026, incorporating voice acting, environmental storytelling, and a low-poly PSX aesthetic. The roughly twenty-minute experience is available free on itch.io for both browser play and Windows download.
